Forget About Marketing - Instead Tell Your Story

To be a successful personal trainer you need to be able to connect with your target market. The best method for doing so is to tell your unique story. The story of how you got into the personal training industry and why you care so much about helping people. If you've gone through the process of losing weight yourself or overcoming major obstacles to become healthy, then believe it or not people want to hear your story.

As a fitness business coach the question I'm asked most often is, how do I attract new clients? While there are any number of marketing strategies you can employ the one that works best is storytelling. We have a knack for remembering stories. The boy who cried wolf, the old lady in the shoe, humpty dumpty are all examples of stories we have heard and remember. Ads come and go and you would be hard-pressed to remember anything from an ad, but tell a story and people will never forget.

I didn't start exercising until I was in my early twenties. I lost both my parents before my twenty fifth birthday. My mom died of cancer and my father passed away after suffering a major heart attack. I knew that if I didn't change my unhealthy ways I would quickly follow in their footsteps. The road to health was difficult. I grew up on chocolate cake and cookies for breakfast so I didn't have the best eating habits. I didn't know what it was like to sweat and believe it or not I failed grade ten gym.

I started exercising in my little 500 sq.ft. apartment in Montreal to an exercise program on TV. It was only thirty minutes long. Five minutes into the program I collapsed from exhaustion. Did I mention I was a smoker too. It took me about a year to get into shape and eventually I joined a community centre health club. It was another two years before I took my certifications and training to become a fitness instructor and then a personal trainer.

I understand from firsthand experience how hard it is to change everything that is familiar in order to become something else. It's not an easy path and there's always the fear of reverting back to that unhealthy lifestyle. However, something inside you says you got to keep going, so you do.

The greatest pleasure I gain from being a personal trainer is helping others on their journey towards health. I share my experiences and the knowledge I've gained a long the way. My hope is to make the path less bumpy and a little more enjoyable for my clients and know that they don't have to do it alone.

That's the power of a story. The picture is created by the reader through the words written by the author. I don't have to worry about creating a marketing campaign, I just need to tell my story to the right people who are ready to hear the message that change is possible.
